Does the "clove toothache remedy" really work?!

Question: Does the "clove toothache remedy" really work?
I'm currently 8.5 weeks pregnant. I have a terrible tooth ache. I made an emergency appointment with my dentist and she said I'd need to have the tooth extracted, but they can't do anything until at least my second trimester. I've spent countless hours online looking for home remedies and such so that I might be able to get some sleep. Every site that I've looked at seem to agree on one thing. Cloves. Whether it be, whole cloves, clove oil, or ground cloves. It's said to numb the gum and help with pain for a couple hours, at least. I'm a little nervous as the baking soda remedy I tried only made it worse. Have any of you ever used cloves to rid yourself of mouth pain? Does it work?

I have seen it work on others when nothing else did. It was liquid cloves, which the pharmacist warned should not touch the gums or mouth because it is very strong. Being pregnant you need to call a poison control center at a local hospital or a pharmacist until you reach your doctor. I don't know anybody who took this during pregnancy. I personally wouldn't have tried that when I was pregnant.

Clove oil is like ambesol and stuff like that... yes, it can make the pain less, or go away, temporarily-- sometimes. No garauntees if it is really bad, though, sometimes it dullens it but that toothache just pushes right through. Tastes pretty bad though. Tough situation, good luck.

It is not magic, it is simply a counter irritant. The brain can only process so many impulses, and the clove helps overload the senses. In such small quantities, it should not affect the baby or pregnancy.

Clove oil is your best bet because you'll have a hard time getting ground cloves to stay put. It works. Before the advent of commercial products it was the only game in town.
Baking soda works for canker sores not toothaches.

Yes it does work. my husand used it with his tooth ache so try it it should help u too Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy : )

Wow, I feel for you! But I don't think cloves will help all that much. I tried them once and really, they weren't very helpful.

The Medline Plus article on cloves says:

"How effective is it?
Insufficient evidence to rate effectiveness for...
Toothache. Clove oil and eugenol, one of the chemicals it contains, have long been used topically for toothache, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reclassified eugenol, downgrading its effectiveness rating. The FDA now believes there isn’t enough evidence to rate eugenol as effective for toothache pain.

Are there safety concerns?
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Clove seems to be safe when taken by mouth in food amounts. But pregnant or breast-feeding women should not take clove in medicinal doses. Not enough is known about the safety of using these larger amounts."

But you can't go on with a bad toothache - and you hardly want to be taking pain killers all that time. The American Pregnancy Association says:

"The safest course of action is to postpone all unnecessary dental work until after the birth. However, sometimes emergency dental work such as a root canal or tooth extraction is necessary."

I'd be inclined to seek a second opinion. Good luck.
