Answers:

My wife suffers from heartburn & taking the digestive enzyme pills have helped dramatically. Don't know if it'd help w/hiatus hernia, however, here's some info below. I actually have a full detailed pdf about digestive enzymes, if you'd like, email me at rvillafjr@gmail.com & I'll be happy to send it to you.

Digestive Enzyme supplies supplemental enzymes that support the breakdown of dietary carbohydrates (including sugars and starches), fats, and proteins. It encourages more complete digestion and absorption of nutrients while supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes.*

They work well for people (especially seniors) who have low stomach acid or difficulty digesting different substances -- fats, proteins, carbs. depending on the individual. Some other good suggestions for heartburn are probiotic supplements and fermented raw cabbage juice.
You should try Homeopathy befroe going for surgery. You might not end up needing it.

yes they do good for those that truely need them i too have a hiatal hernia however im not needing surgery at this point ive been able by TOTAL dedication to the diet given to me by my sister in law who is a homeopathic Dr. for my condition Good luck in your surgery .

Only way to know about the enzymes is to take them - and be sure to take them at the beginning of a meal, not before. They do make some people worse, but there is no way to know that before hand.

Be carefull I tried and i felt so bad i was vometing and felt horible
