What supplements or herbs are best for calming the nervous system?!

Question: What supplements or herbs are best for calming the nervous system?
Basically erm, at the moment I am taking vitamin c (about 2 grams a day) to lower my cortisol. I was wondering though what is best for relaxing the nervous system, as stress seems to affect these things independently. Of course, I am also trying to reduce stress in my life, etc, but it's easier said than done and I'd just love to know a natural supplement or herb that just informs/encourages my nervous system to "take it easy" without harming my body in any way :)

Thanks everyone!

Mike! :)

Some herbs that can be taken as tea that may help soothe the nervous system are:

chamomile
lavender
passion flower
valerian
kava

Kava - best IMO; nonaddictive, works in minutes (if you use the tincture)

Chamomile is a very good anti-inflammatory that can improve your mood, esp if you have swelling.

Reserpine (snake root) is probably the most potent antihypertensive, but it's NO JOKE. You will feel very down and mindless for a day or so after it, but it definitely calms you down.

Apparently, magnesium WITH cardio is advised to reduce cortisol.

You're probably vitamin D deficient like most people in the winter. Take 5000iu of D3 a day and add Omega 3 fish oil supplements to your diet. You can double the amount of Vitamin C if you want.
Go for a few 20 minute walks a day if you can.

Kava is very good but it has also been recently flagged by the FDA as a potentially harmful herb. It is common knowledge that its been linked to liver disease.

I recommend:

Valerian
Ashwaganda
L-Theanine (very good)
L-tyrosine
Rodiola Rosea

Good luck!
