Do medical physicians appreciate Anti-altmeders claiming to speak for them misle!

Question: Do medical physicians appreciate Anti-altmeders claiming to speak for them misleading the public....?
about title protection?

After all Doctor implies PHd. The title Medical Physicians use is honorary after all.
Consequently Chiropractors, physiotherapist, osteopaths, podiatrist etc are all free to use the title as long as they are not claiming to be a medical Physician.

Should medical Physicians be using their energy to protect their title rather than the honorary title "doctor" which a majority haven't earned?

I don't care who use's the title 'Doctor'.

I care passionately who uses the title "OSTEOPATH" because thats protected.
I'd get very angry if someone falsely claimed to be that.

What are your thoughts?
Should engineers mind their own business and leave things as they are or are the medics happy for them to stir crap and cause bad blood?

Answers:

My thoughts? The idea that the term Osteopath is protected is hilarious. The term "doctor' is NOT honorary for a medical doctor, and I stopped really caring after that.

Save the "you didn't have to post' comment Lightening, I did too.

Having recently attended workshops for Science Based Medicine and Skeptical Activism which were panelled by some of the world's biggest names in these fields, I can tell you that yes, scientific skepticism is encouraged in the medical arena. You don't need to be a doctor - you just need a decent bullshit detector. However applied skepticism is a process with many components. It contributes to the self correcting nature of scientific method; a strength of science based medicine but rarely found in alternative medicine.

EDIT: "So as altmed practitioners we continue to treat people even though it doesn't work...." Absolutely. Have you not heard of homeopathy? Reiki? Reflexology? Urine Therapy? Applied kinesiology? Colon Cleansing???

"We don't stop doing things that don't work after feedback from patients then?" No. Obviously!

The term "doctor" is an honorific, derived from the Latin doctoris (teacher) or docere (to teach). It was used in Europe for hundreds of years coming out of the university system in various European cities.

It always should have a modifier. MD means medical doctor. DC means doctor of chiropractic etc.
PhD means doctor of philospophy, and is closest to it's original intent. DO means doctor of osteopathy. I don't really care about titles, since the concept has been watered down by all the meaningless diplomas and titles Alt practitioners give themselves has confused people anyway.

I think people calling themselves "doctor" should always specify what they mean by that. A lot of people use the term without defining it, dishonestly, as they know most people will assume it means medical doctor. I don't think anyone should falsely claim any qualifications or title that they don't have, so I'm not sure what the point of your rant is.

For the record, there is no such thing as a doctor of physiotherapy. Qualification...no practising physiotherapist you are likely to meet at your local physio clinic..if you have a PhD in physiotherapy, which I've never heard of, then of course you could use the title.

I'm a physician, aka medical doctor

This isn't a question it's a rant. How come you're new here yet post just like Lighty including his use of ### ? One would think you're a sock which is against the ToS of Y!A

However to answer one point you raised ...

"So as altmed practitioners we continue to treat people even though it doesn't work"

Well actually one of your ilk who, posts here under the name Lighty, believes in the use of homeopathy which really DOES show the continued use of treatments that don't work. While the general osteopaths don't believe in the germ theory preferring instead to believe that germs are generated by the body as a response to illness.

When these issues are addressed and put in order by the entire body of osteopaths then there might be some respect gained. NB I'm not referring here to US trained osteopaths who had to ditch the woo back in the 50's.

As for " The title is so insignificant to me i don't use it. If I had a PHd I would though." In a previous rant you stated you DID use the title when signing stuff. It's PhD. If you used it outside of academia you'd be considered somewhat of a snob and unusual.

we know the origin of the term. words are defined what they are commonly understood to mean in common usage over time, whatever their original meaning. the most common meaning of the word doctor refers to someone who is supposed to help sick people get better. titles, diplomas, degrees, etc. do not get sick well. merely knowing a million bits of anatomical trivia which are unusable to restore a sick person's health does not make anyone a doctor.

The so-called media skeptics don't represent anyone but their own strange little cult of anti-holistic propagandists. I doubt most of them have even taken a first aid course.
They're very predictable and transparent.
From the overall lack of intelligence displayed, I can't imagine that "whoever" was a very good engineer. These people are on a cheap ego trip. If they want to practise some form of medicine then let them enroll in whatever course of studies they like (if they have the pre-requisites) and go for it. There's an olld Chinese proverb that says someone who claims something can't be done shouldn't interrupt the one doing it.
All anyone has to do is check the legal statutes to understand what title protection is about.
