yes they work. My husband used them back when they were by prescription only.
The ones he had came in 3 different strengths. Each strength provides a certain amount of nicotine to get you through while you are breaking the habit of smoking because it is both an addiction and a habit.
The first 2 weeks you wore one of the strongest ones, change to a new one each day.
It does not completely take away the urge to smoke but cuts it down a lot. While you are not smoking you need to find something to do with your hands to replace fiddling with the pack, lighting the cigarette, etc. My husband used oranges. he would methodically peel the orange, pick off all the white stuff, break them into sections, trim them some more and THEN eat them. Drove me nuts to watch him piddling around with an orange but that was his thing.
Then after 2 weeks you go to the next lower level patch. The first day or so is a little tough but you soon adjust.
Then the last 2 weeks to the lowest level and after the 2 weeks of that, you should have the habit licked.
Yes! They work. The whole patch method is called topical medication. The nicotine is absorbed through the skin, continuiously. My mom has been a smoker since she was 16 and on her first day, she thought it wouldn't work, so she smoked 2 cigarettes in an hour and she actually puked because she overdosed on Nicotine.
The patch is really good, but, the hard part about quitting any addiction is the mental side of it. People get use to smoking cigarettes and when they can't have one it really drives them crazy. Tell your dad to limit his smoking on it because it can possibly make him sick.
