Answers:

As a chiropractor, I have a passion for educating my patients and community on how to make proper health care choices. Recently an article came across my desk regarding lower back pain and treatments. I would like to share a piece of this with you:

On June 16, 2009, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius submitted a report to Congress, evaluating chiropractic services under Medicare. A survey was conducted of 3,464 people seeking chiropractic care for pain and/or difficulty walking, whose symptoms were described as severe or very severe, with 2/3 of those patients reporting that their symptoms "interfered considerably" in their usual daily activities. They were treated with chiropractic adjustments and various physical therapy modalities like EMS, ultrasound, ice and heat. The astonishing results (to those outside chiropractic, anyway) were as follows: of the approximately 2500 people who responded to the survey, 60% of the respondents got “complete” or “a lot” of symptomatic relief from chiropractic care, with 87% reporting a satisfaction rating of 8, 9, or 10. The patients who received “moderate” or “complete” relief from treatment by other strategies, like pills, injections, or surgery was 11%.
If my math is right, then it’s about five times more likely that a patient suffering from severe neuro-musculo-skeletal symptoms will respond to chiropractic care than any other discipline. If I was suffering from severe neuro-musculo-skeletal symptoms, I think I’d want to know that. Put aside the likelihood of iatrogenic consequences and side effects, or the cost-effectiveness, let’s just look at these outcomes for a second. If you were hurting, wouldn't you want the approach that gave five times better results? Dr. Narson comments, “Chiropractic is clearly validated as an effective form of treatment for those with neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, hip pain and shoulder pain. It’s time that the medical profession – welcomes chiropractic physicians as partners in the treatment of these conditions for the benefit of the patient.

Once organic disease is ruled out, ALL neuro-musculo-skeletal – pain patients should be referred first for chiropractic evaluation and care. This report to Congress clearly shows this as an emerging standard of care and an integrated approach with this understanding would clearly benefit the patient.”

Osteopathy or chiropractic to realign anything that's out of place and for proper diagnostics. Any remaining pain or other issues can be taken care of through Homeopathy. There are good reports on Acupuncture/TCM for pain management but it doesn't correct the underlying cause if it's mechanical.
Surgery never carries any guarantees and plenty of people either have no improvement or end up in worse shape than when they started.
Most people never stop to consider that all surgical techniques are based on experimentation and clinical reports. There's no "scientific evidence" to support surgery at all. It's a guessing game. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Pain medication just trashes your liver and kidneys without correcting the cause. It suppresses pain but doesn't elminate the cause of the pain.

I am a Chiropractor. I am respected by many and laughed at by many. But Chiropractic Care needs more awareness.

Spinal Manipulations/Decompression's are:

Spinal Decompression is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for certain types of chronic back pain. It is a non-surgical, traction based therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and arm pain and works by slowly and gently stretching the spine, taking pressure off compressed discs and vertebrae. Spinal Decompression uses state of the art technology to apply a distraction force to relieve nerve compression often associated with low back pain and sciatica. As the Spinal Decompression table pulls on your spine, it gently separates the vertebrae from each other, creating a vacuum inside the discs that we are targeting. This vacuum begins to suck the bulges or herniations back into the inside of the disc, and off of your nerve root. It happens only microscopically each time, but cumulatively the results are quite dramatic. Also, this pumping action pumps nutrient-rich fluids from the outside of the discs to the inside, which then enable the torn and degenerated disc fibers to begin to heal themselves naturally. Anyone who has back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by Spinal Decompression therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, sciatica or radiculopathy (pinched nerves). Spinal Decompression not only significantly reduces back pain, but also enables most patients to return to more active lifestyles. Clinical studies have revealed an amazing success rate in treating lumbar disc related problems with Spinal Decompression. Spinal Decompression utilizes the latest cutting-edge technology to improve quality of life.

Personal Exp.

My personal "go to" for pain management is a book by Peter Egoscue called Pain Free.

Based on the location of your pain, he has special positions that you use to gradually allow gravity to help your body re-align itself and release the areas of pain.

I cannot recommend it enough. Maybe your local library has a copy and you can try it out for free.

I am also a big believer in a daily glucosamine supplement and a baby aspirin.

That said, I do think it is important to understand what is causing your pain - it is possible to be something medical in nature that would not respond well to alternative therapies.

I'm old and have a lot of creaks and aches. I am also an active horsewoman, so managing my creaks and aches is very important. I'm sharing what works well for me.

Acupuncture and herbal therapies would be the most reliable alternative therapies.
