In other words, did the "learners" in the experiment fake their death to make the "teachers" think they killed them?

The tape recording (set up by the learner) was synced with the shock generator and screaming could be heard. After a certain point, the learner could be heard pounding on the wall. pleading about his heart condition. After a specific voltage was reached, no more was heard from the learner. It's implied that he had a heart attack.
