acupuncture, what to first expect?!

Question: Acupuncture, what to first expect?
Going for my first appointment today, and I am soo nervous. What's to expect?

Answers:

I've done it for many years, it helps me sleep better and increases my energy. Don't listen to these people who say it does nothing. I am sorta sensitive so sometimes I feel like a electrical shock when the needles are inserted. But I guess that's pretty rare, I don't mean to scare you. It just make me jump and sometimes scares the doctor.

it can help with a lot of problems, good luck to you. If you find you are sensitive tell the doctor to use smaller needles. They use no. 32 needles for me.

While each place may differ, I can tell you what happened at my first appointment. The acupuncturist asked me a lot of questions about current symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, habits, etc. She looked at my tongue, and felt different points of my body. She then took a few minutes to think about the best placement of the needles, and began. Most of the needles don't hurt me when going in (one does, the one at the very top of my head) and I can't feel them once they're in at all. As she placed them, she continued to check my energy and ask me how I'm feeling, and if I'm feeling any changes. Once the needles were all in, she left the room for about twenty minutes (checking in once or twice) and then came back and removed the needles.

To me, acupuncture feels amazing. I practice another form of energy medicine and my acupuncturist thinks that perhaps that makes me more sensitive to it. The feeling when the needles are in is almost in describable for me. It's utter calmness and serenity. I went back twice a week for a few weeks, and then once a week for a few weeks, and then stopped. It was a great experience and had a big impact on my migraines.

An elaborate placebo effect.

some mumbo-jumbo about meridians and big, long needles being stuck into you at random places.

Either way up it's a placebo only
