Is it safe to take echinacea when pregnant?!

Question: Is it safe to take echinacea when pregnant?
I am worried about getting a cold as I have a little boy 17month old and am expecting again 9weeks gone.
My boy had a really bad cold few weeks ago and was coughing so much he was actually sick. It took ages for him to get rid of it and he still coughs at night occassionally 6weeks later. I took him to the docs he said as he's so young you cant give him anything exept calpol.

I have read up on echinacea and I bought some today. I know its not recommended in children but ive read mixed reviews on the internet so a bit scared of taking it.

Has any of you got any experience of echinacea if so please advise or if you have any other natural remedies that might be of use please help.

Many thanks

It's probably safe to take as directed, but I would consult your doctor first, as it's recommended that you try to take as few drugs or botanical medications as possible during pregnancy.

Generally, herbs should be avoided when pregnant, but echinacea is a great choice if you should need to treat a cold while pregnant. You could also look at mullein if you have a great deal of mucous. If you are going to consult with a health care professional about herb use, talk to someone who actually has training in herbs. Your MD will have to tell you to discontinue if not familiar with herbs, just to play it safe.
