Just wanted to concur with Z. Even at 5,000 - 10,000IU Vit A daily, I wouldnt recommend this amount long term. (I have prescribed in this range for short term [up to 2 months] for some conditions, though.)

Typically, we use Vit A at high dose for skin issues such as severe acne. When using high dose Vit A, though, liver function MUST be monitored to assess for toxicity.

Based on your avatar, I'm guessing you're male. But it's important to note that females of childbearing age need to take major precautions against pregnancy when using high dose Vit A supplementation, because it can cause VERY serious problems for a developing fetus.

Orange discoloration of skin occurs with excessive beta-carotene intake. Beta-carotene is often described as "pro-Vitamin A"... it is converted to vit A in a healthy system. But there's no toxicity associated with beta-carotene (and no risk during pregnancy.)

No.

First things first, starting vitamin treatment without getting blood tests and getting recommendations based on the results is not a great idea, as you CAN overdose on some vitamins, and vitamin a is one of them.

Most people in developed countries are NOT at risk for vitamin A deficiency and will usually be consuming MORE than is required from diet alone. If your doctor has not prescribed it, I would not recommend more than 5000-10,000iu in supplements a day, and I would strongly recommend talking to a doctor before using it for more than a few months.

More than 10,000 IU of vitamin A per day is too much and 5,000 IU per day would probably be better than 10,000 IU per day.

If you take 200,000 IU per day your skin is likely to acquire an orange or yellow tinge which is a warning that you are overdoing it.

The upper tolerable limit for vitamin A is 10,000 IU per day. See http://au.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A…
