valerian root - tablets or powder?!

Question: Valerian root - tablets or powder?
I'm going to start taking valerian root, does anyone know if it is better to take tablets or powder? And if powder, what should I mix it with? Thanks :-)

I suggest you take liquid valerian. I buy it at a health food store. Liquids tend to work more quickly as they are quickly absorbed. You just mix a few drops in a very small amount of water. It tastes awful, but it doesn't last long. I find it works within about 20 minutes.

"Better" is a really relative term with something like this... it really depends on your taste. Valerian has a rather foul taste (and smell) that many people really can't stand so either capsules or tablets are generally preferred, but some people love the taste of it and prefer to drink the straight teas or take a powder. Also, some powders have all sorts of added ingredients to cover up the taste (other herbs/flavors, sweeteners, etc). If you like the taste of the powder, go for it... if you don't like the taste, swallow a cap/tab of it.

Regardless of how you take it, you'll still get the herb in your system and it will help you to relax and/or sleep. If you have any major digestive problems (eg. gastric bypass, taking acid blockers, etc), you might have more trouble breaking down tablets, but you shouldn't have a problem if you don't. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Health/nutrition classes, personal experience (I can always tell when they're bottling Valerian from the smell), and personal research in my role as a Product Specialist for a vitamin company

if you have a coffee maker or tea filters, get the powder and make tea, if you don't like that idea, take the pills

Also, a pile of powder on a fireproof service will burn as loose incense, don't know what you're taking it for, but I find it good sometimes to burn similar herbs as incense then go to sleep, dosing as you breathe, gently float off, it's a fun way to take them don't lie down until it stops burning, fire safety is still important

also, if you're taking it for sleep, try mixing it with mugwort, it'll give you the best dreams

If you intend to stay awake, kava, passion flower, and/or hops

if staying awake, mugwort will offer a mild psychedelic style buzz, but, again, it depends on your purposes for using it

Tablets are the best way for people who do not like the taste of the valerian root. Personally, I prefer taking valerian tea.

Tablets are a lot easier, Kalms are one, Natracalm are better or you could buy Valerian tablets from Natures Best.
