What is the best method of natural family planning?!

Question: What is the best method of natural family planning?
I was required to go to NFP for the marriage prep. I am very unsure about the method I took since it was dependent on how I "felt" if I was damp or dry. Thanks for the help!

I can understand your skepticism. Women are not taught how their bodies work and what normal functions are happening "down there" every cycle. In my opinion, this should be taught in every health class because it helps girls understand so much about their bodies.

There are different methods of NFP. Some depend only on cervical mucus observations, like dampness or dryness, others also incorporate taking your temperature every day. Some women prefer the methods that use temperatures because that helps confirm what they are observing with their mucus observations.

NFP actually is more than just how you feel. It is the systematic observation of cervical mucus every time you go to the bathroom. If you are skeptical, just do your own observations for a couple of weeks. The best time to observe the changes are the 2 weeks after your period ends. What you will see is that at first, when you wipe before and after using the bathroom, is that there is nothing noticeable on the toilet paper and when you wipe it feels scratchy and dry.

Then, after a few days or a week, you will start to notice something on the tissue. There might be some dampness or even a slight amount of white or clear fluid that is a little sticky if you touch it between two fingers. This is a sign that your body is getting ready to ovulate. You will normally see a buildup of fluid for 3-5 days before you ovulate. As ovulation gets closer, that fluid (or mucus) will start to grow in quantity. It will become all clear and if you touch it between two fingers it will stretch over an inch, sometimes up to 5 or 6 inches. When you wipe, you will notice that the tissue glides easily and it feels slippery when wiping. These are signs that ovulation is very close. After ovulation, when you wipe, it will again feel rough or scratchy and your mucus will either dry up or will change to a sticky type fluid again.

These are very clear signs - you really can't miss them, especially once you know what you are looking for. I am guessing that you only got an introduction to NFP at your marriage prep. I would encourage you to take a full class because once you understand the method, you realize why a woman's body is made to show the signs of fertility and infertility and how easy it is after a couple months of practice to know exactly what is going on and how to use that knowledge to achieve or avoid pregnancy.
