Were you subjected to medical treatments that are now known to be wrong?!

Question: Were you subjected to medical treatments that are now known to be wrong?
I would love to hear your stories or knowledge about treatments that were supposed to help injuries or ailments, but were just plain wrong. For example my Grandma used to put butter on my burns when I helped her in the kitchen when I was a kid ....... yep turn that burn into crackling !

The most extreme I can think of was the Cigerette. It was supposed to aid the digestion and calm nerves. When the revolutionary filter was invented the main ingrediant was asbestos!!

Do you have more cures that were worse than the injury/illness?

I wouldn't say wrong, more like lazy.

I went to army doctors over and over just to be told everytime "you're faking, here's some pain killers, now go away"

Doesn't mean all doctors are bad, just that that particular subset I happened to encounter deserved to be beaten severly.

Also my dad had insane beliefs that anything that made you happy caused cancer, as well as thinking "incan healing mud" could cure muscle injuries, cysts, and joint pain.

Medical history is full of examples of absurd treatments that were abandoned after it became clear that they were useless. Some of them however still live on in the world of alternative treatments. And since you asked in the alternative medicine section, I'd be happy to supply you with an example of just that.

Back in 1917 coffee enemas was introduced as a method to get rid of toxins through the bile system. It was still in use in conventional medicine until the early 1970'ies. In the 1830'ies the idea was put forward as being useful as treatment of cancer. It really isn't but even today there are proponents of alt med who strongly claim that it is. In addition to being without effect on the cancer, there is also a risk of direct injury: http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/about-cance…

Back in the 1920's radioactive water was big business. Touted to cure everything from arthritis to high blood pressure to acne. Too bad it's side effects were hair and teeth falling out, decaying bones, fatigue, cancer... :) >>>http://www.museumofquackery.com/devices/…

the quackery continues today. they still give treatments that hurt or kill people and have no scientific basis. most are toxic chemicals. tv commercials for law firms suing on behalf of people injured by drugs are commonplace. nothing has changed.

blood letting and purging use to be common. Now the same ideas are in use in eastern medicine - balancing the humors.

Magical belief in water is quite popular

The history of conventional medicine is full of horror stories of patients being given doses of mercury and arsenic that predictably killed them. They blamed the patient! His disease was just too advanced. Bloodletting, toxic nostrums and enemas were part of orthodox medicine, not holistic or natural medicine. Most people in the day wouldn't go near a doctor -- plenty couldn't afford to pay for treatment and others knew the treatment was worse than the disease.
Most cultures preferred folk or herbal medicine.
Homeopathy was the first form of medical treatment that was not invasive, toxic or painful. It's used alll over the world by tens of millions of people.
TCM/eastern medicine does NOT employ purging of any kind. This is an outright fabrication.
The only medical treatment that I was subjected to was vaccination which has never been approved by many researchers/scientists/medical professionals. It's one of the biggest con jobs and scams of the 20th century.
Chemo. and radiation for cancer will kill you faster than the cancer.
