How much Melatonin is too much?!

Question: How much Melatonin is too much?
If I took Melatonin to help me sleep, and I wake up through the night, can I take another one? I've never taken this sleep aid before, but I've have numerous people tell me it'll help. I took one at ten and one at ten thirty, I finally fell asleep at 12, but I woke up at four.. Is it okay to take a third pill? Is that too much Melatonin?

Among the dietary supplements used for insomnia are melatonin and valerian. Effects of their long-term use have not been studied, but it is recommended that you use either for only a limited time.

Melatonin, a hormone produced in the human body, works to regulate your sleep-wake cycles. Supplements are generally synthetic versions of the hormone. Melatonin has been used effectively to counter jet lag and appears to be effective in helping people get to sleep. Proper dosing has not yet been firmly established, but according to WebMD, "A host of studies show that as little as 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams may be enough for most people." Melatonin has been used safely for up to three months at a time.

What dosage are the pills? The usual dose is flexible, but generally between 1-5 mg a night total. If they're fairly low dose and you have at least 4 more hours to sleep, you shouldn't have any problem with taking a third pill. In any case, the only verified side effect of melatonin is daytime drowsiness, so it might be worth experimenting with the dosage schedule.

Also, if you're finding they wear off, there are extended-release versions available that might help.
