Most of the body's DMT, much like Serotonin and other neurotransmitters, is broken down by the enzyme MAO in a process called oxidative deamination. It converts the DMT into a metabolite that is inactive. Obviously this is the "natural" function of our body. As evolution would have it, it turns out that tripping on endogenous DMT all the time isn't exactly advantageous to humans for survival. Thankfully the rainforest shamans and the desert nomad folk have discovered plants that can provide a way to inhibit the MAO activity in the brain and allow for the levels of these endogenous compounds to spike.
To place such states of mind on a pedestal as if they are the true natural state of being is foolish, as even the shamans know that you gotta come down sometime. If the compound was more readily present in the bloodstream people would act far from their "natural" selves. I think they would have a hard time functioning in the everyday world. It could be the reason behind the high levels of DMT in the bloodstream of people suffering from Schizophrenia.
I feel like there's probably a reason our bodies inhibit most DMT from reaching our brain. Possibly because when we experience a large amount of it, we leave our bodies entirely. This would be risky behavior for animals in the wild, and humans as they evolved. Rather we get a taste of it when we sleep, but not so much that we can't snap right out of it if we need to. I don't think you get complete access to the spirit world until you yourself die. Until then, your 3-dimensional body will always pull you back.
