This is common mistake. They take unexperienced acupuncturists who are able only to make needles insertions, not treat people, and analyzed the results. They also can do their "quality clinical trials" with a monkey as acupuncturist - the results will be the same. Don't listen, this is lie!
Unlike the conventional medicine, where the doctors should not use own head, but they only follow the concrete standard of treatment, Good acupuncturt always have deep thinking.
Actually there is a way to get such kind of help, BUT the result strongly depends on qualification of practitioner and the cause of your illness. If your hair loss is connected with genetics problem, the chances are poor. If it is connected with organism's poisoning, you have a good chances to get your hair back.

P.S.: Well, your question caused the discussion between skeptics and adepts of acupuncture.

It's very strange position of skeptics: for example, if one doctor (e.g. gastroenterologist) can not cure my disease, so I will go to second doctor-gastroenterologist, if he/she can not cure me, I will go to third and so on. If they all can not help me, so what I should conclude? that gastroenterology is fake medical science because it is useless for me?
The real facts is independent from any person's opinion. The truth is that acupuncture really works, every acupuncturist knows that, but not every acupuncturist (like gastroenterologist, etc :) knows how to treat people. Acupuncture works even when conventional medicine is not working. We CAN prove it.

Let me join your discussion.
Added specailly for Nate:
! Dear Nate,
First, if you proclaim that acupuncture does not work, you have to prove it; otherwise your words are just unsupported by evidence (without adducing any proof), i.e. bare words. Please, don't refer to authority which never had serious study of acupuncture's theory and practice. You should take own responsibility for your words.
Second, if you are smart person, you could agree with me, that denying something that you have no knowledge about is silly. We can prove concretely and personally for you that acupuncture really works and that is not placebo effect. Just one needle, just one point, only for about several weeks every day inserting for about 30min, and you will get any disease that you prefer. Please, choose what do you want in order to see that acupuncture works: you can get diarrhea, headaches, stomach ulcer, heppatitis, etc. - everything that you like - it will be yours. If you dont believe in acupuncture, why you can't prove that it is not working by yourself?

Well Smart *** has spoken, unfortunately I have no idea what point he is trying to make. From a realistic view,If acupuncture did work for hair loss, wouldn't every guy who is losing his hair be going to a acupuncturist?

edit: Good point. I'll ask another question then. If acupuncture worked for baldness, why would anyone have hair transplant surgery? And certainly wouldn't the word be out about the benefits by now?

edit #2 I really wish it would work...I could use some more hair lol!

The Queen has spoken...

We know that in these days a queen is not a queen anymore,
and should better keep her mouth shut,
instead of talking b u l l s h i t.

I mean it.

Of course it can help. But you need to use acupuncture in a right way.
The cause is within you (or your ancestors).
Your goals should never be to compensate a 'result',
your goal should be to listen to your body and respect it,
to listen to your heart and respect it,
to listen to other people ... NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

Only when they have some wise advice, but even then be careful.
Try it out for yourself, your experience may not be theirs.

When you listen to you heart and to your body,
the energy starts flowing naturally and you will need acupuncture or whatever art less and less.

The energetic arts may help you in the awareness and temporarily in the effects
(dis-ease or joy depending on your connection with Source).
But still the cause is never in the 'energy' level, but in the information level,
which are your thoughts/emotions/actions as a whole.
There is no name for it, you can only experience/research/feel it.

Nope. The highest quality clinical trials show that acupuncture is no greater than a placebo.

Edit: I don't know what "Kaiser" is. Whether they offer it or not has no bearing on the evidence of it effectiveness. Just because something has been in use for a long time does not mean it is effective. Bloodletting was practiced for thousands of years, would you argue that has any bearing on it's effectiveness? Astrology, been around a long time. I could go on, but I hope you see my point.

Acupuncture was developed when next to nothing was known about the human body. Meridians and chi have never been proven to exist and their existence is implausible, to say the least. Clinical trials have shown that it doesn't matter where you stick the needles, or whether they even penetrate the skin.

Your gf is a poor example. Swelling is something that comes and goes on it's own. Cases like this are the bread and butter of alternative medicine. They treat conditions that can resolve themselves.

Your example of overweight people is a poor analogy. Exercise and diet takes hard work and dedication. If it worked, getting needles stuck in you to combat baldness takes next to no effort on your part.

Comparing the qualifications of acupuncturists is laughable. That's akin to measuring a persons ability to pray.

Edit: "Your pointing at the head is the typ. assumption of western medicine that shoots the spot where the symptoms are, instead of treating the cause."

I never mentioned anything about sticking needles in your head.

"In France homeopathy is paid by the government as a valid medicine for some cases. Same for acupuncture."

Homeopathy is even more laughable than acupuncture.

"Astrology? Please These are doctors who studied years and years, don't compare them with all the people here in the US who believe in UFO or ghosts and whatever including medicines like Propecia or Minoxidil with all their side effects and who knows what we'll find out in few years about them. "

Clearly you missed my bloodletting example (or ignored it). Polls show that around 30% of Americans believe in astrology; ghosts, the same. Clearly not as low as you were thinking. My point is that it's popularity doesn't make it true. A few doctors may practice acupuncture, but acupuncturists are not doctors, and they have no universal "training" requirements. The difference between a "poor" acupuncturists and a "good" acupuncturist is the confidence in their ability. The more confidence they have, the better the placebo effect.

My mind is open to the evidence. The best evidence being randomized, double blinded clinical trials, show that it is no better than a placebo. Your gf's ankle or your friends allergies don't trump that kind of data.

Yes, you can use acupuncture and Chinese herbs for hair loss; it is typically a sign of Kidney Deficiency.

No. Hair loss typical in men is caused by chemical changes in the hair follicle. Acupuncture will not help. You can take a couple different MDS you can get prescribed from your doctor. Or you can try Minoxidil
