Yoga is a great form of exercise that has many different facets.
There have been a number of studies that show regular practise maintains spinal disc space and that practitioners don't "shrink" in height as they age. It improves flexibility, balance, and was the inspiration for Pilates. Any type of exercise has a health benefit, and plenty of studies show that people who lead a sendentary lifestyle (your proverbial couch potato) have more health problems than people who are active. This is really a no brainer.
People who practise yoga couldn't care less about "scientific" proof any more than hockey players are looking for a scientific justification for enjoying their sport/activity.



Yoga is a practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. Like most alternative medicine there is a lack of well designed scientific studies about its use and at this time, no conclusions can be drawn for specific health conditions.

Unlike most alternative medicines however, yoga has a certain amount of plausibility; once you take the woo out of it you're left with all the benefits of good exercise, breathing and relaxation, and there is nothing 'alternative' about that.
