What's the best yogurt to "re-establish" intestinal flora?!

Question: What's the best yogurt to "re-establish" intestinal flora?
What's the best yogurt to buy at the grocery store?

Answers:

Get a probiotic, eat more complex carbs.

Reduce simple carbs/ sugars, and stress, these both help imbalance the intestinal flora.
If you are going to buy yogurt, find one that is just plain yogurt. Don't buy the flavored ones. Or you can find kefir which I think contains a lot more helpful bacteria, than just normal yogurt, but isn't as expensive as getting a probiotic.

Look for one that's organic, and preferably raw/unpasteurised (if you can find it), without any flavouring, sugar, colours, preservatives, or other additives. The more natural the better - and obviously make sure it has live cultures in it. Even honey can inhibit bacterial growth, so just go for the super-plain one without even that.

You could also try making your own sauerkraut to help re-establish the good-guys too, or using other fermented foods like kefir etc - the Western A. Price Foundation book 'Nourishing Traditions' has loads of amazing easy recipes to try that would help as well, if that's what you're trying to do. Good luck. :-)

Danactive, activia, anything with live cultures is good. I personally do not like the taste of yogurt so I use probiotics which contain more live cultures then eating yogurt. Works like a charm, especially if you've been taking antibiotics and have lost all good bacteria, probiotics really help to level you out.

I prefer something called Kefir, which has a slightly different microbial profile - it is chockful of L. Planarum and L. Rhamenosa, which actually LIKE living in the intestines. The are also found in saukraut and kimchi, it is the reason why fermented foods are suppossed to be good for a person.

Yogurt contains very little in the way of probiotics -- read the labels. It has minimal therapeutic value.
A decent probiotic supplement is supposed to contain 15 billion cells per serving.
The best yogurts are organic and contain no fillers or artificial sweeteners.

You want a yogurt that says "live active cultures" on the label.
Look for Activia and organic varieties, like Nancy's.
Good Luck,
Alec
