Is it safe to do yoga after having arthroscopic knee surgery?!

Question: Is it safe to do yoga after having arthroscopic knee surgery?
I had arthroscopic knee surgery in January. The doctor said I need a knee replacement, but have to wait till 'm 65! Due to my age (49) and being overweight....no one will do it. The doctors say mostly the age because the parts wear out, yet they won't touch me because I'm overweight. (I'm working on losing it).

I live in Canada and have to follow this system, can't run around getting different opinions.

I have massive osteoarthritis in my knee. I need to know if it's safe to do gentle yoga or maybe would yoga (the one with heat? what is that called?) would that be safe..bearing in mind of course I wouldn't do a pose if it directly was on my knee..but so many poses involve the knee...so that is why I am asking.

I appreciate your input.

Take care. : ' )

Answers:

I started yoga after a year in physical therapy for a bad auto accident, and I was in a class with more than one person in a wheel chair. So... the answer is yes, you can do it, but it is going to require 1) you get your doctors ok - have him look at the knee before you try this and 2) that you find a teacher that is familiar with the most complicated joint in the body, as well as pose modification. For that reason, I would suggest you try to find a teacher trained in the Iyengar method. If you are overweight, I would not try the Bikram (the hot yoga) the series of poses is very intense, not to mention it's done in a 103 degree room. I've seen more than one (very fit) person get sick from doing it.

If you google 'canada arthritis yoga' you can come up with all sorts of things.
I just liked that one.

Here is a lesson online if you want to watch before you look into it more - this one is intended for people with arthritis.

Also, consider T'ai Chi.
You can google International Taoist T'ai Chi Society to find free lessons around the world - I've done it in the park not far with me with those guys ;)
