pharmacist, a glamor name for medicine vendor?!

Question: Pharmacist, a glamor name for medicine vendor?
I'm a graduate of highschool here in the philippines and planning to take up pharmacy on college. But then, I've read an article saying that pharmacist is just a glamor name for med vendor. It's kind of discouraging for me reading this but, can someone specify what can a pharmacist do that other medical professions can't? other than distributing/selling meds... :/

Answers:

Pharmacists also work in drug development and design and as consultants to companies such as those who advertise medicines.

Pharmacists have responsibility to ensure medicines are dispensed safely and they can also dispense some medications without doctor's permission. Getting an education in pharmacy will put you leagues above those who are scared of drugs and think water and magic can cure disease, lol!

Pharmacist are experts in medicine. Physicians go to them for questions on medicine side affects, actions and so forth. They do more than dispense medications to customers. They are experts.

how are you going to feel when you see the news items and lawsuit notices about drugs you have sold to people having caused serious injury or death?

Some folks will call you a dope peddlar, drug dealer, etc, etc, as well....
Don't pay any attention to them.

Pharmacy has become a much less interesting or notable occupation because the vast majority of pharmacists no longer know how to or are capable of compounding medicinal substances themselves. Amost everything arrives "ready made" and it's just a case of taking a quantity of pills out of a big bottle and putting it into a smaller one. All of the key info. on the drugs is available online to anybody who wants to look for it.

I recently had to fill a prescription for a family member and two of the drugs prescribed by the doctor had interactions with other drugs. Neither the doctor nor the pharmacist caught it until I pointed it out to them. Then it took them quite a while to figure out what to do about it... Not impressive.

That's one reason why "properly prescribed" prescription drugs are the 4th leading cause of death.

Every part of the medical industry has it's protected turf: someone to make the drugs, someone to sell/dispense the drugs, someone to prescribe the drugs, someone to market diagnostic tests, etc.
It's a business like any other, but it treats it's customers like crap.

You can call a garabage collector a "sanitary engineer".
