Can I go off my meds to start a alternative treatment?!

Question: Can I go off my meds to start a alternative treatment?
I am starting a raw vegan diet that requires me to not take my diabetes meds...so should I go off it or just continue taking it?It won't interfere with my diet right?thanks!=)

Answers:

Do you have type I or type II diabetes?
The medication won't interfere with your diet. If you monitor your blood glucose levels you'll see that the diet is improving the situation and with type II you'll be able to get off the medication completely.
A lot of the result will depend on whether you have type I or type II. Very few type I's have been able to completely ditch the insulin.
Type II diabetes is completely preventable and curable with lifestyle changes and supplementation.

I'm assuming that you're a type 1 diabetic, as type 2 diabetics are rarely prescribed medication.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease; you cannot do without your medication, nothing is going to reverse it.

Type 2 diabetes isn't reversible either, but is usually controlled by diet. That is all this raw food diet is going to do - control your blood glucose level. I've watched the promotional video fo the raw vegan 'treatment' of diabetes - without exception the type 2 diabetics taking part had been eating badly - usually very badly - and their blood glucose levels dropped when they began to eat a healthier diet high in vegetables and fruit, and continued to remain lower as long as the regime was followed. Wow - pay the doctor involved large amounts of money for that advice!

There is nothing magical about a vegan diet either; I had been a vegan for 14 years when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

No, if you are taking medication for diabetes you should consult your doctor and follow and do as s/he advises.

Is not wise to do that. First, you have to consider if you've been a vegetarian before. If not, your body has to make great adjustments to the nutritional basis of your daily intake. Changing to a drastic raw vegan diet means that there's going to be a decrease of certain elements that you've been having your body used to. So, if you are really into raw food first consult your physician about this. Diabetes is a serious condition that needs to be taken with precautions. Then, try to find a serious and accomplished naturopath who can give you all the basis to raw diet. I've been a vegetarian for 20 years and I've been to different types of veggie modes for different reasons.

Anything that "requires" you to stop taking modern medicine should be suspect. Go for a follow up with your doctor and tell him about this new diet you want to try. Listen to his/her advice. Ask for a referral to a registered dietitian who specializes in diabetes nutrition.

Don't make changes to your treatment without your doctor knowing.

DO NOT stop taking your meds for diabetes with out talking to your doctor that monitors them. If the diet lowers your sugar levels enough he may authorize the stopping or lowering the meds. They are imparative to your health.

do not stop diabetes meds without the consent of a qualified MD. You already knew that, right?

Any changes being made to your medication need to be overseen by your doctor.

Check with your doctor before changing the use of prescribed medication.
