Internal Medicine PA?!

Question: Internal Medicine PA?
I'm planning on attending PA school in the next two years and I have a really strong interest in internal medicine and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect as a PA in internal medicine? What responsibilities do you have? Do you have autonomy? What is a typical day like? What is the salary outlook in a hospital or private setting? I really appreciate anyone who has time because I've shadowed a neurosurgeon, family medicine pa, and a peditrician, but just find myself fascinated by internal medicine. Any information or advice you can give would be great! Thank you!

Answers:

You can get salary info from www.aapa.org.

The degree of autonomy depends on the docs you work with, not your specialty. My group is great.
I've known other PAs that almost have to get permission to sneeze.

For an internal med PA that's office based, it usually starts around 0730 and ends (hopefully) by 17:30.
Lots of patients, fast paced, lots of paperwork. You'll eventually have your own patients.

As a hospitalist PA, the shifts run from 8 to 12 hours. Typically very fast paced. You'll have your own patients to round on with a doc for backup. For a new grad, that would teach you a lot in a short period of time.

Good luck!
