The doctor puts needles where your muscles are tense. the needles pick out the pain or something like that.

Acupuncture is a pre-scientific attempt at healing - developed by ancient cultures which had no real idea of how the human body works. It's basis is meridians - pathways in the body through which the life-energy known as "qi" is supposed to flow. Acupuncture points (based upon astrological calculations) lay along these meridians and the insertion of needles at these points is supposed to correct blockages in the flow of the qi.

There is no scientific or anatomical evidence for the existence of qi or meridians; clinical research shows the results of tests using sham acupuncture (including twirling toothpicks at random locations on the skin) are the same real acupuncture - no better than placebo.

It's not surprising that sticking needles in the skin will illicit responses in the brain - however this does not suggest in any way that acupuncture works. At this stage the best that can be said is that it is an elaborate placebo, and while some people may report good, albeit temporary results, there are more reliable, effective and less expensive ways to treat medical conditions using modern evidence based medicine.

Acupuncture is one part of the system of medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the insertion of thin, filiform needles into the body to effect physiological changes that stimulates the body's inherent ability to heal.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine hypothesizes that by stimulating specific regions of the body we can stimulate homeostasis and self healing. The insertion of needles into acupuncture meridians is one techniques that accomplishes this body stimulation.

Biomedical evidence suggests that acupuncture reduces local inflammation, stimulates blood flow, and alters chemical and electrical activity in the pain sensing regions of the brain.

It's a Chinese Medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body in dictionary lingo.

In simple terms, specialists/doctors insert needles at the site of pain. It is supposed to relax muscles and it surprisingly doesn't hurt too bad.

First you start meditation, best is just observing the body with a calm mind (vipassana).

Vipassana meditation is insight meditation.

So this meditation will give you insights.

If you are diligent and develop the factors of enlightenment,
you will understand more and more.

And on the way you will understand acupuncture much better than anyone could explain you.
