Answers:

Your friend obviously has suffered a traumatic head injury. Your brain is "floating" or "bathed" in water all the time. It is called "cerebral spinal fluid" or CSF for short. There must be just enough but not too much of this fluid to be healthy. Because of the injury extra fluid is entering the brain area and causing increased pressure. The fluid is not dangerous but extra pressure can be very dangerous. They can relieve this pressure by drilling holes and draining it, by giving a special diuretic to draw out extra fluid or by installing a "stent" or a tube from the brain to the abdominal cavity if it is long term problem. This fellow is just going through the normal problems of his injury. Yes, it is serious, any head injury is, but he is getting proper treatment and many, many people recover fully. It depends on the extent of the damage how well your friend will do.
