Question:
How do you know have overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism?
whats the difference?
Answers:
Overactive thyroid, Hyperthyroidism and Thyrotoxicosis are the different names of the same condition. There is overproduction of thyroid hormones, Thyroxin(T4) and tri-iodo-thyronine(T3). The pituitary-produced TSH is supressed due to the overactivity of thyroid. This conditions is commoner in women of age 18-38 and remains for about 4-5 years. there is weight loss, sweating, palpitation, fairness of complexion, tremours and hyperdefecation. Any good clinician can suspect thyrotoxicosis on the above symptoms and a blood test for T3, T4 TSH can usually confirm the diagnosis.
