I can't swollow pills?!

Question: I can't swollow pills?
Im a teenager and yesturday my doc put me on prilosec. one problem, i cant swallow the pill! im terrified of choking and my parents were yelling at me to take it so it made me upset and i started to cry. I want to swallow the pill i just couldn't take it down with the water i was drinking. The prilosec is just a capsuel with the beads of meadicene inside it and it says i could sprinkle it on applesauce and take it that way but i dont think my parents will let me do that. What are some easier ways i can take this pill?

Answers:

Tell your doctor that you cannot swallow pills, and she/he will write a prescription for a different form of the drug that does not have to be swallowed.

There is a form of Prilosec that is dissolved in water, that you can take with a teaspoon.

You may want to open the capsule and mix it with honey. If you have been prescribed prilosec for acid reflux, then you may want to try apple cider vinegar to help improve stomach acid and digestion.

Overeating, poor diet, eating junk food or other food that is hard to digest, eating when stressed, living under stress, nutrient deficiencies (notably vitamin B6, zinc and thiamine - vitamin B1 which are necessary in the manufacturing of stomach acid), poor chewing all lead to not enough hydrochloric acid or digestive enzymes. A lack of both lead to various GI issues including acid reflux.

Proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Protonix should only be taken up to eight weeks, at the most, as stated on the package. The FDA issued recommendations to only take up to 14 days, 3 times a year.

I can't swallow pills either! (Unless they are VERY tiny!) Ever since I was little my mom and doctors have made try and try and try. I have come to the conclusion that I just CAN'T, and never will! I actually thought I was going to die once after trying to swallow a pill! I am not trying to scare you, but it was a smaller pill (but not tiny) and so I thought I could do it. I tried not to think about it much, took a huge gulp of water and tried to swallow it. All of a sudden I felt a lump in my throat, so I thought it went down but just hurt, but then I coughed and up it came. I still had the lump in my throat and so I starting trying to swallow to make it feel better, but I couldn't swallow! And when I would try to swallow I couldn't breathe because my spit was in the way! I didn't realize this was the reason I couldn't breathe right away and so I kept trying to swallow and was gasping for air and really thought I might die (I was 15 years old and at a friend's house). My friend and her mom were freaking out and tried giving me the heimlich, lol (now funny, wasn't then). I finally figured out if I didn't try to swallow my spit I could breathe just fine, I just had to drool. Well they called 911 and the ambulance came but I couldn't tell them anything cause I couldn't talk either. I went to the hospital where they insisted I COULD swallow and it was just in my head (just a stupid teenager, right?) I kept shaking my head "NO!" but they kept insisting so I tried and started coughing and couldn't breathe all over. So then they believed me. They then put a tiny camera in my nose (it hurt!) and down my throat. It turns out that the pill had scraped my throat and damaged it and so it was refusing to let me swallow. I just had to wait it out. Later that night I finally tried a popsicle (which the doctors told me to do) and was able to swallow. For the next couple days I looked like I was wearing BRIGHT red lipstick though from all the times I had to wipe the drool off! So, after that I didn't try swallowing pills for another 3 years. The next time I tried it happened again, although it wasn't quite as scary since I knew what was happening and what I needed to do to be able to breathe.

So, I tell you this LONG story so in case it happens to you, you know what to do! Because it is VERY scary to not be able to breathe and think you might die! Other than that, yes, I would say open the capsule and mix it with applesauce or yogurt. I take several vitamins each day, I just open them up, put the contents in a little container with some juice, put the lid on, shake it, and then open it and kind of knock it back and swallow quick, lol. It tastes gross for a few seconds, but for me it's better than trying to swallow them. And even though I am 22 I just have to ask for liquid medicine when I go to the doctor, so don't feel bad if you need to do that too. Tell your parents you are old enough to know what is the right way to take your medicine, or just do it when they're not around, if it makes them mad (which it shouldn't). Best wishes! Hope I helped a little!
