Do incense oils have medicinal properties that make them work or are they just u!

Question:

Do incense oils have medicinal properties that make them work or are they just unique smells that people like?

I noticed different ones in a special store labeled aphrodisiac and relaxation, etc. Do these actually medicinal effects like herbal things or are they just smells that are "supposed to remind people of those things" or something?

Answers:

If these are pure essential oils you are describing, they definitely have medicinal properties. Some are so potent they can be dangerous if not used properly - sage, for instance, pennyroyal, nutmeg and red thyme.

However, since aromatherapy has become so popular, even the room fragrance people have hopped on the bandwagon and started marketing fake scents. Buy your essential oils from a reputable company, and shop in a natural foods store or buy direct from the manufacturer. Some well-reputed companies are Young Living (very pricey), Aura Cacia, Starwest and Now Foods.

Some relaxing oils are lavender and chamomile. Some with aphrodisiac properties are ylang-ylang, vanilla & patchouli. Blends are typically more effective. For instance, a meditation blend might contain bergamot, amyris, ginger & ylang-ylang.

Putting them on incense cones or disks is one way to diffuse the aroma into the room. You can also put them in a pan of hot water, or on a hankie. Many can be diluted in a "carrier" oil like grapeseed oil and massaged on the body.
