Help! What are some good herbal ideas for mastitis?!

Question:

Help! What are some good herbal ideas for mastitis?

Our cow has dry mastitis. Her previous owners told us recently that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was given antibiotics. She seemed fine until she started bagging up and we thought she might be pregnant. Then one day she just wouldn't get up and it took us two days to drag her up to the barn. It looked like she was going to die. We massaged her with neem oil and a lot of pus and blood was milked out. She was given garlic and neem but also given alfalfa which we know is high protien food but thats how we gave her the medicine. At a point we gave her antibiotics and that helped a little, but not much. She is a holstien originally from a dairy. She could barely stand for a week. It has been a month since she went down. She grazes and walks and moos and chews her cud. But the mastitis lump in her milk bag is getting big. We are exausted with the whole ordeal.

Answers:

If you are giving your cow POSILAC, or any other medication containing rBGH, please stop giving it to her. It will give her mastitis for sure.

The best herb for mastitis is Dandelion which you can make it into a poultice and treat her twice a day with it. Apply the poultice to the affected area for about 45 minutes each time.

You can also give her a lot of Dandelion to eat daily for about 20 days. It will stimulate a powerful cytokine in her immune system to help her combat mastitis.

There is a nice report about a Canadian product known as Udder Comfort which has taken the benefits of peppermint oil and other natural ingredients to new heights by including tea tree oil in its unique formulation. The result is a product that not only reduces swelling in inflamed and sensitive udders, but dairymen have also witnessed dramatic reductions in somatic cell counts - particularly with early-stage mastitis.

You can find more info about it right here: http://www.mycattle.com/health/dsp_healt...

And you can buy Udder Comfort going to this link: http://www.wendellsdairyservices.com/uc_...

Good luck! :)
