Most insects have a natural dislike for vanilla, since most people like vanilla splashing yourself with some increases the way you smell to most people while driving off the bugs, gnats, misquitos, etc.
If you are bitten, or stung by a bug get some mud and try spreading it over the inflicted area, if that doesn't quite fix the problem try spreading it more over the rest of your body, including your face, kneel down, clasp a hand to your heart, while bending and halfway raising the other and sing, "Mama." This usually doesn't help the itching anymore than the initial patch work, but usually by this time you feel and look silly enough that you have all but forgotten about whatever pain you have been subjected.
