Have any of you used licorice root extract to cure herpes ?!

Question: Have any of you used licorice root extract to cure herpes ?
I came across a study stating, "The glycyrrhizin in licorice root directly inhibits a number of viruses including several DNA and RNA viruses such as herpes simplex types 1 and 2, HIV and hepatitis viruses in cell cultures. Glycyrrhizin irreversibly inactivates Herpes simplex."

Have any of you used licorice root extract for HSV? Has it worked?

Answers:

There have been human trials using licorice for herpetic outbreaks. But it's not a "cure"... the glycyrrhizin does inactivate the virus when the virus is bathed in it for about 5 minutes, but it only inactivates the active virus (lytic stage) with direct contact. You would use it topically (ie: soak a cotton ball in licorice extract and then apply directly to herpetic lesions.) Evidence is that it will help resolve outbreaks very quickly.

Herpes infections, though, have a latent or dormant stage. The virus travels up a nerve root and will lay dormant there, producing outbreaks during times of stress, lower immunity, etc. The licorice does not kill the latent virus.

Summary... licorice root can "kill" an outbreak, but does not entirely resolve the infection so you'll never get an outbreak again.

It appears to be pretty worthless.

I searched the literature, less than a dozen papers in the last 30 years.
Several in vitro.
2 in vivo, both required injecting large quantities of the active ingredient.

In other words, a raw extract will not do a damn thing.

Get actual anti-HSV drugs to deal with outbreaks.
