Question:

I have read that Stevia is harmless as a sugar alternative. Ive also read that its dangerous.Who is right?

Answers:

I believe both answers are right. Let me explain. In one hand you have the alkaloids present in this plant in its natural state, which may interfere with fertility, plus the way it affects the metabolism of carbohidrate which makes it suspicious of contributing to cancer. In the other hand there is not doubt stevia has helped daibetic patients more than any other sugar substitute in the market by improving their circulation significantly.

The problem I see is that its manufacturers are making the same mistake the sugar industry has done: in order to make it more acceptable to diabetics--its main target--they do not hesiate to refine it and purify it. The refining process is an adultaration of the wholeness of the plant, and disarranges the molecular structure of its chemical substances. That, and not any other thing, may pose a serious risk to consumers.

I do recommend Stevia to my patients, specially diabetics, but I always and strongly advice them to use the green leaves or the green powder and not the white one, which is the refined version. Besides, stevia shouldn't be used indefinitely. If you want a sugar alternative, then use common sense and rotate your options weekly. For example: you can use honey one week; next week Maple Syrup grade B; next week stevia; next week Xylitol, etc.

Good luck! :)
