Epsom salt didn't end my constipation?!

Question: Epsom salt didn't end my constipation?
I took Epsom salt laxatives yesterday and I have a lot of diarhea afterwards. It was all in water form and very little poop came out a long with it. My stomach is still very large and full. What else can I do?! Why isn't more of the pooP coming out along with the water? Should I take it again today? Would it be safe to take it regularly? I am constipated for two years already because I held in my poop so much when I was younger. How can I eliminate this problem besides that I shouldn't hold in my poop anymore? Also, what disease can I possibly get if this goes on?! I'm really scared.

Answers:

If you had watery diarrhea but no stool came out, you have a fecal impaction (see link below), which could be a medical emergency. It means the poop is too dry and compact to come out regardless of how hard you strain. It can cause a colon rupture if you let it go.
Don't know of any diseases caused by chronic constipation, but I have it, and it can sometimes cause an impaction if I let it go for too long.

The previous answer about fecal impaction is a very real possibility and you will need medical help to correct that. In the meantime, do this - drink 32 oz of water within 10-15 min. This trick worked every single time with my kids when they were growing up and became constipated. They didn't like it but I felt it was better than laxatives. Don't take anymore laxatives because you don't know what's going on in your tummy.

It's not as if the water passes through and everything else adheres to the sides.
Quite using harsh saline laxatives. Go to the drugstore, and ask the pharmacist for a stool softener that does not contain a laxative.

And quit holding it. You trained your body, now you have to re-train it the other way.

Epsom salt is the wrong kind of salt to use.

Epsom salt is just a trade name for magnesium sulfate. One tablespoon of the salt contains about 35g (grams) of magnesium sulfate, or roughly 3.4g of elemental magnesium. This is a very large amount, especially if you understand the daily-recommended allowance is between 300-400 mg (milligrams) per day.

Laxatives are also not good to use. It may sound like a contradiction, but it is true. Laxatives can aggravate constipation because they make your bowels sluggish and dependent upon the chemicals to work. In addition, laxatives can cause other intestinal problems such as diarrhea and bloating (two of your complaints), and they can even damage your intestinal lining over the long term.

The best thing to do is

1) Increase fiber intake.
2) Increase water and salt intake (use unprocessed sea salt, not Epsom salt. The sea salt has 84 minerals that your body needs (and it tastes better than regular table salt).
3) Exercise. "Moving things along" is much easier if you exercise the muscles that do the work.

This isn't an instant fix - it isn't a miracle cure. But it's the right fix and will work if you give it time.

Follow the water and salt protocol found through the link below.
