Answers:

Alcohol is used predominantly as a preservative. It is also used as a disinfectant (e.g. alcohol swabs before an injection - this is usually isopropyl alcohol, not the sort of alcohol you drink which is ethanol).

It can also be used as a fuel, eg methylated spirits, which is mainly ethanol with a bit of methanol (wood alcohol) added. Remember when fondues were trendy (no, you are probably not that old). Spirit lamps use alcohol as fuel.

Alcohol is also used as a solvent. A tincture is something dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and water, e.g. tincture of iodine is iodine dissolved in alcohol and water. There are many things that will dissolve in alcohol, but not in water, and alcohol has the added advantage of being a preservative so the solution will keep for longer.

Alcohol is what is in alcohol that damages your body. Alcoholic beverages contain a mix of substances that include water, alcohol (ethanol), plant extracts, sugars etc. It is the alcohol part that is the most damaging. Ethanol damages liver cells, causing fatty liver and eventually cirrhosis if taken in large quantities. It also can cause dehydration as it replaces water in your body. It damages nerve cells, including brain cells.
