Answers:

I've been through acupuncture. It is particularly effective for pain. You lie on a table, like a massage table, fairly upright with pillows for support. They have dim lighting and music to help you relax because the acupuncture treatment is more effective when you relax. The needles are very slim, so you may not even feel them. The acupuncturist pays very close attention to your feedback so if the needle is inserted into a particularly sensitive point, they will take it right out. The pain being released means the needle has balanced an acupuncture channel in your system. Typically they put in about 20 needles any given session. I've had needles in my feet, legs, abdomen, face, head. The needles stay in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Before your session, the acupuncturist evaluates your overall health from a chinese medicine standpoint, so they may insert needles to balance you rather than just to take away the pain. They go for the root cause of your problems rather than just trying to take away a symptom like western medicine does.

After the procedure is complete, I feel like I've been on an extended vacation, completely relaxed and pain-free.

I can't help you on prices. I'm in the Midwest and an hour session runs around $65 to 70. California will be higher.
