I think the best way to learn about herbal medicine (botanical medicine/phytotherapy) is to do a good course. There are a number of courses around the world, both face-to-face and distance ed courses. If you are in the US, search for Michael Murray and David Hoffmann (separately). They are both excellent herbalists who teach in the US. Both have written good books on the subject. Bastyr University in Seattle has an excellent worldwide reputation for herbal courses.
