Does anyone know how the massage experience in Europe differs from the massage e!

Question:

Does anyone know how the massage experience in Europe differs from the massage experience here in the US?

Answers:

I have had massages in both the U.S. and in Europe (Italy, where I live) and there are two general differences:

1. Europeans are generally not as embarassed about their bodies and will just be naked for a massage. As such massage therapists are not as modest about covering you up, etc., -- although if you ask, a good therapist will respect your requests. Some however will insist that they can't give you a good massage if you are clothed.

2. Massages generally tend to be much softer rubdowns here in Europe (at least in my experience and from people I've talked to). Don't expect a deep tissue massage -- although I have found some therapists who do give a more intense massage.

The key to getting what you want to try and speak clearly with the massage therapists and communicate your needs (not always easy in another language but worth a try). Also, there are some spa resorts that cater to tourists and therefore Americans and they have a better idea of what Americans are looking for in this regard.
