Question:

I went to a talk about reiki but was put off by the speakers claims?

the practioner said they could help with people medical problems even without touching the patient and stated the patient didnt even need to be in the room for them to use reiki to help.
in my head alarm bells rang as i got a whiff of quarkery but can reiki really work with a hands off approch? if so how

Answers:

"Distant healing" is a technique used by several energy healing modalities including Reiki. The efficacy of the treatment has to do more with the intent and capabilities and ethics of the person doing the healing than anything else, but a proximity setting or hands-on is still usually preferable. And yes, it does sound like quackery and to those grounded in traditional learning paths, it will probably remain so.

Having been a Reiki practitioner and energy worker for many years I have seen "miracles" as well as failures all using similar techniques for the same malady. Just as in medicine, there are some things and people and circumstances that respond to one type of treatment and not to others. Reiki is no different. Miracles abound whether through herbs or medical cures or energy work.

My suggestion would be to go to a Reiki practitioner with whom you "connect" (basically, go with your first reaction to this person. If it is someone that you feel that you can trust and are comfortable with, you're on the right track). If they claim to be anything but a conduit or channel for the energy, go to someone else. Then give them a person to whom you wish to send energy--- you can state the "why" of the request, but it shouldn't be necessary to do so. After the session, do a followup with the person to whom the energy was sent and compare notes. It shouldn't be necessary to "warn" the person in advance unless that is your wish. The worst that can happen is that nothing is sensed by the recipient. Conversely, they may get a thought of you or a sense of misplaced well-being or some sort of a recovery from whatever it is that ails them.

The "how" of distant energy healing is that energy is not confined to a time/space continuum as our rational minds would have us believe. All things are made of energy (ask any student of quantum physics). It is the vibratory level of the energy within a given substance that makes it unique in our world. Healing energy is a fairly high energy level and remains at this level of intensity despite the distance traveled. It naturally dissipates over a period of time or after it has come into contact with a "need". And, yes, I know that I stated that "time" was not part of the factor--- linear time is not a factor while spatial time is-- another whole discussion!

So, choose to believe what you wish, but at least give it a try before discounting it completely. One of my best students was a woman who was totally skeptical of the whole process and claimed to "feel nothing" after a treatment (to prove that it was a lot of poop. After her third session of "feeling nothing", she became a student and lifelong friend). It may prove to you that you are right, but it could change your way of looking at the world of healing as well. Good luck!
