Specific phobias are considered the least serious group of phobias. It has been estimated that one in ten people has a specific phobia at some stage. However, the figure is likely to be higher since many sufferers are able to avoid encounters with their phobic stimulus, do not seek treatment or may not admit existence of their phobia. Avoidance is the most common "safety-seeking" behaviour for people suffering from specific phobias.
Five subgroups of specific phobia can be distinguished, namely2:
Animal phobia – Phobias provoked by exposure to particular species such as spiders, snakes, cats, dogs, or sometimes several species (for example, flying insects).
Natural environment phobia – These phobias are provoked by exposure to, for example, storms, water, high places and forests.
Blood-injury-injection phobia – These phobias are provoked by the sight of blood, accidental injuries, surgical needles (giving blood or receiving a vaccination) or other surgical procedures.
Situational phobia – Provoked by, for example, enclosed spaces (claustrophobia) such as lifts or tunnels, flying in aeroplanes or using other forms of transport, or crossing a bridge.
Other phobias – Provoked by a broad range of stimuli, such as phobias relating to exposure to certain diseases (for example, AIDS, choking or vomiting), objects (for example, mirrors or statues) or certain types of people (for example, clowns or people wearing costumes).
