Is it possible for a Chiropractor to paralyze you under treatment?!

Question:

Is it possible for a Chiropractor to paralyze you under treatment?

I went to the chiropractor, and he applied alot of pressure directly down on the spine on the back of my neck, which sent a shock down my left arm. Now it is very sore.

Should I be worried? Could you possibly get paralyzed from a Chiropractic treatment?

When he applied pressure directly onto the spine while I was lying down, I felt the bones bind on top of a meaty nerve feeling thing in my neck. That's when I felt the heavy shock go down my left arm that didn't feel normal. It was on the bone that sticks out on the base of the neck so I'm not sure if it should've been pushed down.

I've had Chiropractors all my life but never adjusted or felt like that. You're positive no spinal injury could've occured at all?

I guess I'm not really worried about being paralyzed. I'm just worried about losing part feeling or sensation in any part of my body.

Answers:

As a chiropractor I can assure you it is extremely difficult to get paralyzed from an adjustment, regardless of what you may have heard from those that are misinformed. I adjust hundreds of people a month and I've never had an issue, ever. The only risk (and extremely low at that) would be a Vertebral Basilar Artery Infarction (Damage to an artery in the neck). There are certain people who MAY be at risk for that (Obese, Smoker, Diabetic, etc). To put it simply, your chance of getting paralyzed from an adjustment is lower than getting your hair cut, according to actual statistical research.
Occasionaly, the first adjustment (or after a long time between adjutments) can cause some discomfort because there are vertebrae moving that have been subluxated for such a long time. Think of it like starting a workout. It doesn't always feel good in the beginning, especially if you're already in pain. Your discomfort shouldn't occur after every adjustment. Ask your chiropractor if he/she can adjust you with a different, gentler technique. You'll be fine. Just get it fixed 100%, that's the key. All the best!

I would also like to add that you are likely to lose sensation or feeling in your limbs if the nerve exiting your spine remains subluxated (misaligned with nerve pressure). Again, I've never had a patient of mine lose feeling or semsation with proper adjustments.
