I sing in a number of choirs, and I have been really suffering with a scratchier horseness in my throat. HELP?

We have been singing alot and I need a cure for this, becaue we have alot more singing to do

Answers:

There's two things you should do. The first is harder, but much more valuable. Be absolutely sure you are singing from your diaphragm and not your throat. If your voice is properly supported and not strained, it'll bother you less and you run less chance of injuring it. Ask any and all of your choir directors for exercises to help with this, and then DO them.

The other thing's a lot easier, but is only a quick fix. Drink boiled gingerroot water. Get a piece of gingerroot from the produce section of the grocery store. It should be enough to just about cover the palm of your hand -- or 4 to 6 ounces (1/4 to 1/3 of a pound.) Scrub it, slice it, and boil it in a pan of water (the gingerroot should be well covered by the water) on the stove for about 20 minutes. If it looks like it's boiling dry, add more water. Let it cool just a little, add a bit of honey to it to help get it down, and then drink a mug of it. If there's leftovers, put them in the fridge for later and heat it in the microwave or on the stove. If you don't like the taste, so what? It's medicine, not a recreational drink. Be tough.

Boiled gingerroot gives your voice back for a short time (20-35 minutes) even if you lose it. It also helps keep you from losing your voice, and will restore it from its scratchiness.
