Is oil pulling just an internet hoax?

I have read about it online but it is too stupid to be real. Where did this crazy hoax start?

Answers:

I agree that it seems rather stupid but I've also read posts by others who say it works. Sunflower oil seems to be the preferred favorite for the swishing part, but vegetable oil will also work.
