Question:

Could Acupuncture help me with shaky hands?

The shakiness of my hands is very slight, it is hard to notice. However, I feel uncomfortable sumtimes. I've heard that acupuncture can help with shaky hands. Is it possible?

Answers:

Hi Dr.ESB, do not lose time for experiments, if you are worried about shakiness, consult your doctor rather than try to work out the cause yourself. There are many varieties of shakiness that are difficult to describe, but doctors can recognize the common types easily from experience. Also, some simple tests, such as a blood test for thyroid overactivity, might be appropriate. Your doctor may use the word ‘tremor’ to describe shakiness that consists of small movements.

It is most likely to be benign essential tremor. When people notice their hands are shaky, they often start to worry that they have Parkinson’s disease, but this is usually not the case, it may be reaction your body on critical situation. We all become trembly if we are angry, stressed, anxious (‘shaking with nerves’) or very tired. Low blood sugar causes shakiness because the nerves and muscles are deprived of fuel. Too much coffee and tea can make you a bit shaky, particularly in combination with a low blood sugar.

Do not hurry to begin any treatment, you needed establish the diagnosis. One thing which should be checked is your thyroid activity to ensure it is not overactive and also your serum caeruloplasmin as problems with copper metabolism can also cause tremor.

You can have are several treatment options available if this is benign essential tremor and not only Acupuncture.
