Hello Hannah,

Xanax is a benzodiazepine. It causes sedation/intoxication, muscle relaxation, antianxiety effects, amnesia, and has anticonvulsant properties.
The body can become highly addicted to xanax. People can actually die from stopping taking it abruptly due to seizures. You can die from cold turkeying alcohol as well and barbiturates from seizures.
The truth of benzodiazepines is actually if you take the drugs legally or illegally the side effects and long term dangers are for the most part the same. It is a myth that say someone buys 8 mg per day on the street is an addict and a person getting 8 mg or whatever from their doctor is immune to the long term effects. I have seen many a life destroyed by benzodiazepines like xanax. I run an internet withdrawal support group for it. The street abusers and the legal doctor addicts who follow their doctors orders all suffer the same long term damage, withdrawal symptoms, adverse effects on cognition, emotions and personality as street drug addicts. Their aint much difference, trust me. That myth is propogandised by the manufacturers who make money from these pills and the doctors who are too gutless to admit to the huge drug addiction problems they have and continue to create in their own patients.
If you really want to learn about sedative hypnotic addiction and even just simply how these drugs work, I recommend that you read this resource online http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/...
Remember it is dangerous to stop these drugs suddenly if a person has been using these drugs regularly. They must be gradually weaned off of over a period of months and months.
Do read that link I gave you above by professor heather ashton the world expert on benzodiazepines. It is the most reliable.
Be careful what you read online as a lot of the info is put out there by the drug companies or it is just people quoting propoganda originating from the drug companies.
Xanax is highly addictive. It is more of a physical addiction, where the body cannot cope with the withdrawal symptoms and the person becomes enslaved to the drug. Alcohol is a very addictive and toxic drug. Long term use of alcohol shrinks the brain, causes brain atrophy and a severe physical dependency with withdrawal symptoms such as psychosis, severe anxiety, panic attacks, depression etc.
Long tem use of alcohol or benzodiazepines like xanax will probably result over time to changes in personality, impaired cognition and other physical and mental health problems.
