I didn't say that other victims should not receive benefits. I was just trying to be more detailed to give me a better chance of getting a good answer.

I'm saving money but it's hard on SS.
I want a vehicle but not a van. I can get help if and when I do purchase a vehicle. I don't have credit.

Answers:

what on earth??? you are asking this quesiton in alternative medicine & if I am reading it correctly... you are wondering if a gunshot victim has any access to ownership of a vehicle but not having to pay for it..... is that correct?

In my limited knowledge, even a person who has been paralized from the waist down has to provide an automatic transmissioned car to Voc Rehab in order to have Voc Rehab then install the hand controls, provide the training & the licensing for a hand-driven car.

Can't you use the bus system?

I suppose more info would be needed or a better understanding of your question. And perhaps your location.. it may turn out that something is available where you live that I have never heard about.

Okay - go to one of those no-credit-no-problem-we-take-p... type of used car lots... yes, in the long run it will cost more... but in the short run (or the month-to-month budget frame) you should be able to make it work

I feel for you... I was a passenger in an auto accident & had to liquidate everything I owned just to be able to afford a portion of the $300,000 that was my co-payment after insurance just to be able to walk again.

The doctors wanted me to go on SS... and I most likely should've but I refused.. I was stubborn as a mule about getting back to work....

Neither here nor there. I know it is tough on SS... but it is also tough on folks that make minimum wage... or (at least in Alabama) even worse, $10 an hour... those folks make to much for any assitance & can't afford rent in a safe neighborhood either..........

Please don't take it wrong... I now have gotten to know lots of folks in similar situations to what you are expressing.... In Alabama, even quadrapalegics are having a difficult time getting SS & those who can get it have to go without working for an average of 3 years.

Most of those of us who can't drive take the bus & yes, for folks like me who can't drive, that means allowing an extra 4 hours per day just to do a round trip to & from work.. not to mention the limitations of living & working on the bus routes

Yep, I to can be given hand-controls on a vehicle if I can come up with the vehicle myself. Just like you I am not able to afford the extra expense of a vehicle and the insurance or I would have to live with my Mom (and she is 10 miles from any bus service) to afford that luxury

The house I owned prior to the accident (the driver didn't have any insurance, so other then my health insurance, it was all on me)..... the house I owned and had paid towards for 15 years had to be liquidated..... even if I didn't have to liquidate it to pay the bills, it wasn't anywere close to Birmingham's very limited bus service... I can only imagine what I would do if I had lived in any of the areas (the majority of the state of AL) without bus service

Not trying to be mean or rude or anything like that... but honestly, as the other person said... there are many types of victims out there... why would one get assitance that another couldn't get?

Now I will add these thoughts:
If I were going to call looking for charitable donation of a vehicle I would
+ Call small used car lots & ask if they would consider trading services for a vehicle (for example could you relieve them a little by doing paperwork or answering the phones to work off a lesser-valued car?)
+ Talk to your church... if you've been going there for years, they may be willing to place a notice in the bulliten of your need... perhaps even call every church in the phone book
+ Call United Way, Salvation Army & any other charitable organizations and ask them if they have any ideas on who can help you with this need
+ Join a Barter Association & trade your way to fulfill your needs... mom & pop businesses are often willing to trade services... by doing this, you may be able to cut corners in other ways (for example, if you can do graphic design, you could ask a small local grocer for a small trade in exchange for well-designed printed post-card advertisments......... if you can type, trade a local business supply store for printer paper and card stock in exchange for an inventory list) ------ I do alot of trade exchange... I trade for things I can do such as write business plans, graphic design, marketing plans, media buying, public relations, etc........ I have exchanged for re-built laptop, printer paper & printer supplies, music festival tickets, cover charges to see musicians that I like, vet costs for my medical aid dog, garden supplies, food, fabrics, painting supplies, beading supplies, work on my air conditioner, my co-pays at my physical therapist
++ save money by living frugally... for example make your own laundry detergent, it costs less (@ 4 cents per load) and it works better. Prior to the accident that changed my life I wasn't really concerned about living frugally... now I am Greatful for the lessons I have learned. Prior I thought I was "treating myself" when I chose to eat out once a week... now I don't eat out & don't feel as if I am deprived of any treat.... It can be a difficult adjustment at first, but it is wonderful and eyeopening!!!!
