Does applying vapor rub to your feet help cure coughing?

I recently received an email claiming that a research group in Canada determined that applying Vicks vapor rub to the soles of your feet can help cure nighttime coughing. I checked Snopes.com and they have it listed but the status is "undetermined" so I'm trying to find some more info from people who may have actually tried this.

I've never heard of this working before. I have heard of applying it to your chest or upper lip or nose to help with coughing, but never your feet.
