How do I cleanse my dreadlocks of dandruff flakes and mold--they smell musty?!

Question:

How do I cleanse my dreadlocks of dandruff flakes and mold--they smell musty?

I am rasta, no I will never cut them . I am searching for a natural home remedy. I have tried lots of different herbs and oils. I am quite knowledgeable, so please no patronization. I just wanna know if anyone knows a organic herbal cleanse for locks that is strong. I am not interested in products--more into what I can make myself. My locks are natural and I have never put anything in them to create them. I have had locks three times now-it's nothing new. Any old-school herbalists out there with advice?

I did this for a friend...it isn't easy to get rid of the flakes, but using apple cider vinegar as a rinse when you wash should help dissolve them. For the musty smell, I would wash and oil the hair, twist the roots (if this is part of your loc maintenance) then sit under an old fashioned hair dryer until your hair is completely dry. This could be up to 2 hours depending on how thick your hair is...bring a good book. That should get ris of the moldy smell. After that, you need to make sure your hair gets COMPLETELY dry after you wash it all the time. I would invest in a tabletop dryer (in fact, I have one that I am selling for $10..but that's beside the point). Good luck.
