to know and appreciate Chinese medicine, you must understand its philosophy; the Chinese believe that the body is equipped with all the abilities to heal itself; a body is healthy when everything inside is balanced; thus to heal is restore the balance; the point of imbalance must be identified and isolated; then, steps are taken to help the body bring itself to balance;
Chinese medicine works by inducing the body to heal itself; it is better and lasts longer because: (1) since it is the body that will heal itself, there will be any side effects (because there are no external factors - like synthetic chemicals - to remain after the healing process, everything is natural); (2) since the body healed itself, it will "remember" how it did it and will be prepared for it the next time;
what makes Chinese medicine frustrating, at times, is that it shrouds itself with "mystery" - as in unexplained rituals that must be followed; sometimes the remedy works but the reason for its effectivity does not make sense;
I was taught that to address a "normal" stomach ache (one caused by eating something "bad") we take a piece of whatever caused the ache, heat it until it is burnt, then eat the charred portions; the "explanation" is that the negative (burnt food) will "cancel" the positive (the cause of the ache) hence restoring the balance; the actual rationale, I learned later through my own research, is that the burnt food is mostly carbon and carbon is a natural and potent anti-toxin; (this is one reason why certain anti-loose bowel movement medication is grayish black or dark - it's the carbon content);
finally, western medicine is known as allopathic medicine and I invite you to google "IATROGENIC DISEASE";
