Reflexology works fantastically for back bain. Even just applying acupressure to the relevant part of the foot works brilliantly.
My father was hit by a semi-trailer (and survived!), and had excruciating back pain afterwards (as you can imagine). He is a GP himself, and the only thing he found that helped his back was reflexology. He swears by it, and has recommended it to his patients ever since.
To self-treat, my father recommends getting something like a golf ball (something that is hard that you are able to manuever around your feet). Then, roll your foot over it until you find a really tender spot (for the back, this will be somewhere on your instep). Once you have found that tender spot, press down on it (on the golf ball) for about 20 mins.
