Can I choke on a capsule pill?!

Question:

Can I choke on a capsule pill?

Answers:

If you mean getting the capsule stuck in the throat by the gel coating, and gagging, then yes- which is why they recommend taking capsules with a lot of water. But if you mean can it completely block off your esophagas and cut off your breathing, no. It's not nearly big enough, to completely block off the throat of anyone much over 10 or 12. Capsules are not given to children, though, as a rule for that reason. It doesn't block off their throats, but it is more likely to stick and make them gag. If you are talking about a gel capsule- one that splits into two halves, it will pretty quickly dissolve in the presence of moisture, so although if may get stuck and feel like it, you are really in no danger of choking on it. Solid capsules are more likely to just scrape along and hurt as they slide down if you don't drink enough water. Any oral medication can make you gag, but the actual risk of choking to death is way down there on the list.
