I have been told that accutane is an antibiotic used to control grade 4 acne. I !

Question:

I have been told that accutane is an antibiotic used to control grade 4 acne. I disagree.?

Based on the definitions for accutane and antibiotics I don't think the two are related at all. They both are acne treatments however.

Answers:

Is your question "Are Accutane and antibiotics the same?" Either way, people seem to have misconceptions about these drugs.

The answer, as you stated, is no. Accutane is isotretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A that inhibits sebaceous gland secretion and helps exfoliate your skin to keep skin cells from clogging your pores. Accutane does not, in any way, affect bacteria. However, antibiotics (like doxycycline or topical clindamycin) help control the bacteria P. acnes, which is one possible cause of acne. As you said, they are both acne treatments but they work in completely different ways.
